In this week’s Free Poem Friday, we step once more into the quiet threshold between the natural world and the infinite beyond. Five Nocturns in One Night is a gothic meditation on silence, memory, and the subtle awareness that lingers beneath both forest and firmament.
Drawing inspiration from the cosmic dread and atmospheric beauty found throughout Lurid Lamentations, this original poem explores the uneasy stillness of night—where ancient trees, distant stars, and unseen presences converge into something both sacred and unsettling.
If you enjoy gothic poetry, cosmic horror, and reflective verse that lingers long after reading, you may also explore more within the Lurid Lamentations collection or browse our growing archive of weekly works.
Let the night unfold.
Five Nocturns in One Night | A Gothic Poem
Tonight the heavens unfolded their immeasurable canopy of constellations,
a cathedral of remote fire older than memory.
Ash-quiet winds wandering through the forest's darkness,
stirring ivy and rusted gates.

Ethereal trees leans skyward like ancient witnesses
to something the stars themselves once recorded.
Amid the vast stillness the forest seemed suspended between breaths.
Ebon ravens drifted slowly across the pale lattice of distant starlight.
Hushed mist gathered between the trunks
like the residue of some fallen cosmic dream.

Remote constellations trembled faintly beyond the fog,
their lanterns lingering in patient vigilance.
Soft starlight bleed through the branches
like memory through ancient stone.
Through the frostbitten ground,
every shadow lengthened with deliberate patience.
Somewhere beyond sight, a star dissolved into darkness like a thought erased.

Echoing branches creaked
like cathedral ribs beneath the slow tide of the night.
Keening winds carried rumors
of stories the darkness had never relinquished.
Slowly a streak of distant light dissolved across the firmament.
Cold galaxies turned along the rim of immeasurable elsewhere.
Unspoken intuition lingered that the void possessed awareness.

Deep silence returned
like a veil drawn across forgotten memory.
Now the forest listened with every root and stone.
While the stars gathered above in quiet congregation.
High overhead the heavens leaned nearer.
Still the night endured - vast, indestructible, and listening.
